Indoor Track Season 2020-21 Modifications/Changes
With Covid-19 still a concern for the indoor winter sports, adjustments are necessary. The indoor season will include as many athletes as possible that desire to participate, but with that will come changes. The biggest concerns that are addressed with these changes are total numbers of people in the facility at one time and keeping athletes distanced from each other as much as possible. The objective is not to have any clusters of athletes and to have athletes near each other when necessary for no more than 10 minutes at a time. Less is better. With this in mind, the following are some requirements necessary to reach our goals.
Regular season
The 2020-21 season will have multiple 3 hour track meets on given days with a cap of about 450 total athletes/meet. This number includes boys and girls. Examples below:
One day only meets (Magic City and MLK)
7:00-10:00 am
11:00-2:00 pm
3:00-6:00 pm
7:00-10:00 pm (if necessary)

2:00-5:008:00-11:006:00-9:00
6:00-9:0012:00-3:00
4:00-7:00
(One hour is needed between events to allow Crossplex time to disinfect.)
Alabama schools more than 60 miles from the Crossplex have first priority for entering the meets and should do so no later than the Monday before the meet. Tuesday and later registrations are open to everyone else on a first come, first served basis. If a time slot is full, choose another time slot. If it fills in the middle of a coach entering his team, the coach should contact Devon Hind by email ([email protected]) or text (205-807-9144) for direction on what to do.
Doors would open when Crossplex is done disinfecting and no more than 30 minutes before the event is to start.
All spectators and athletes must wear a mask at all times (Unless competing) while inside the Crossplex.
The bleacher limit at any one time is 950, per The Crossplex.
Coaches are expected to do temperature checks on their own athletes prior to competition/entering the Crossplex.
Athletes and coaches must stay on the home side bleachers.
Spectators can only view from the visiting side bleachers. (Long jump side of the track)
Only essential personnel are allowed on the Mondo surface. This would include competing athletes, officials, volunteers and coaches in coaching boxes(limit of one per school per box).
Spectators, multiple coaches from the same school, college coaches and non-competing athletes are not allowed on the Mondo surface.
Spike-check would be available outside the arena prior to the doors opening if it’s later than 30 minutes before competition. Inside the arena, spike-check will be set up in 2 locations and monitoring will take place so that social distancing is done.
Athletes are encouraged to warm-up outside unless there is inclement weather. If there is inclement weather, other arrangements will be made (If the bb arena is available).
The interior warm-up track will be monitored so that only the athletes who are in the next competition will be allowed in that area. Example: if girls are running the 60 dash, only 60 dash boys will be allowed in the warm-up track. There will be no loitering in the warm-up area. This is for the final phase of warm-ups and is not intended to be a place to do an entire warm-up. (i.e–if it takes an athlete 45 minutes to warm-up, they need to do at least the first 30 minutes outside)
Athletes will be expected to know their heat and lane assignments. Heat sheets will NOT be posted this year. All this information is available on-line @ xpresstiming.com or al.milesplit.com.
All results can be found on-line as well. Results will NOT be posted after the competition.
Athletes will be called to a holding area near the shot put circle not more than 10 minutes before they are to compete. Athletes should report ready for competition (no extra clothing or shoes).
Officials will line up athletes when they are 5 minutes away from competition to alleviate large numbers of athletes waiting in the corals for a long period of time. Numbers will be handed out to the athletes in the corals. Athletes will NOT have to get their number prior to this time, but the athlete will need to know what lane they have been assigned so they get the correct number. The official will NOT have time to look up this information for the athlete.
Athletes should have their mask on until they are in their lane on the track. At the starting line they may remove the mask and the athlete is REQUIRED to carry the mask during competition. Immediately after the competition the athlete should put their mask on. Failure to have the mask after competing will result in disqualification from the event. It is suggested that many athletes consider wearing the gator-type mask so the possibility of losing a mask during competition does not exist.
After finishing a dash race, the athlete will immediately exit the Mondo surface and not go back toward the clerking area.
After finishing a race on the oval, athletes will remain on the inside of the track near the finish of the dashes. After the next race has started, the athletes will then exit the track near the long jump pit and then immediately exit the Mondo surface without heading back toward the clerking area.
There will NOT be any individual or team awards given during the regular season.
The Crossplex will have designated entrance doors and exit doors.
We will follow USATF guidelines for how many participate in a dash race. These guidelines vary depending on the current threat level of Covid-19. High threat level is every other lane. Low threat level, as it is currently in October, would allow every lane to be filled.
There will be no 4 x 800 or 4 x 400 during the regular season.
The 3200 will only have one boys’ heat and one girls’ heat per meet. Coaches will be encouraged to only enter athletes in this event if they are trying to hit the state qualifying mark. If it’s not possible for an athlete to hit this qualifying mark then they should not be entered in the 3200. Time constraints are a concern for having this event since it will take a minimum of 30 minutes for this one event.
When an athlete and/or their team is finished competing for the day, they need to leave the Crossplex ASAP.
There will NOT be any water coolers available at the Crossplex. Athletes should bring their own personal containers of water or purchase it from the concession stand. Sharing of drink containers is strictly forbidden.
The shots will be disinfected after every throw.
Hand sanitizer will be used by athletes before and after touching the starting blocks.
State meet considerations specifically
Two athletes per team per event that have hit the qualifying mark for the indoor state meet may be entered into the meet, but only the top 12 athletes that are officially entered will be placed in the meet.
Example: In the 1600, 16 athletes have hit the qualifying standard, but a coach decides not to enter his athletes who are ranked 10th and 11th into the meet. The other 14 athletes are entered into the meet. Xpress timing will only download the top 12 athletes who have been entered. The other 2 athletes that did not make the cut and their coaches will see that they did not make it when the heat sheets are posted.
Since competition will not take place in the 4 x 800 and the 4 x 400 relays during the regular season, the following is how teams must qualify for these relays for the state meet: A team must have 3 athletes that hit an average time for the open 800 or the open 400 that hits the average qualifying time for the relays. One relay per team is permitted, as usual
Example: If the qualifying time for the 4 x 400 is 4:00 minutes, each of the 3 athletes must have an open 400 average time of 60 seconds for their team to qualify. So..if a team has a 55.0, a 59.5 and a 65.1 for their top three 400 runners, their team would qualify to compete at state because the average time for those 3 athletes would be 59.9. Coaches must figure this out on their own before entering their relay in the state meet. Xpress timing will not be responsible for figuring this out.
We will have 4 different state competitions on the same day in the following time slots for both Friday and Saturday. This will give enough time to do all of the running and field events in two days. (We will try to figure out which classifications would be best suited for each time slot depending on travel or other considerations. The classifications with the least travel times should get the early and late time slots.)
8-10:30
11:30-2:00
3-5:30
6:30-9:00
The divisions are 1A-3A, 4A-5A, 6A, 7A.
Team awards could possibly be done in the bb arena attached to the Crossplex so it would not delay the start of the next event.
The Crossplex would be emptied of athletes and spectators after each track meet. Athletes are not allowed to be spectators of events outside their classification. i.e.–6A athletes cannot watch 7A track meet.
